Zoólogo británico nacido en Holanda, fundador (con Konrad Lorenz) de la etología. Hermano de Jan Tinbergen recibió su Ph.D. en la Universidad de Leiden y enseñó allí hasta 1949, año en que asumió la cátedra de zoología de la Universidad de Oxford. Enfatizó la importancia tanto del comportamiento instintivo como del aprendido para la sobrevivencia, y utilizó el comportamiento animal como una base para especular sobre la violencia y la agresión humanas. Sus observaciones de las gaviotas lo llevaron a importantes generalizaciones sobre el comportamiento en el cortejo y el apareamiento. A partir de la década de 1970, él y su esposa, Elizabeth, estudiaron los trastornos del comportamiento humano, particularmente el autismo. En 1973 compartió el Premio Nobel con Lorenz y Karl von Frisch.
